Manufacturing Today Magazine Features Hopkins Printing

COLUMBUS, OH (March 28, 2012) €“ Hopkins Printing is featured in the Spring 2012 issue of Manufacturing Today.  The article €œFit to Print€ spotlights six printing companies that have continued to experience growth despite digitalization and the recent recession.

The article notes that the total number of printing companies in the U.S. has declined by more than 25% since 1998.  While the number of businesses may be shrinking, the printing industry is still one of the largest as it employs over 909,000 people and shipped $140.7 billion in products last year. Hopkins Printing€™s continuous improvement and lean manufacturing efforts paralleled nicely with the innovative product launches, customized solutions, improved operations and the environmentally friendly initiatives of the other companies profiled by the magazine. The other five companies selected by Manufacturing Today for this article include National Envelope, Printpack Inc., Consolidated Label
Co., Bio Pappel International, and Gill Studios Inc.

In the article, Jim Hopkins, founder and CEO of Hopkins Printing outlines his keys to a successful business and his efforts to instill a vision in his management team.  This mindset can be seen throughout the company from the regular investments in state-of-the-art technology to the unique €œ3 Deep€ training program. Hopkins Printing has been able to implement continuous improvement and lean manufacturing practices to become more successful in the present and to plan for the future.

Hopkins Printing Named a Top 50 Small Company Workplace in America

COLUMBUS, OH (May 23, 2011) – Inc. magazine and Winning Workplaces announced today the winners of the 2011 Top Small Company Workplaces competition and awarded Hopkins Printing one of the 50 coveted spots. The Top Small Company Workplaces competition is an annual contest that has recognized the nation’s best small and mid-sized company work environments since 2003.

Winning Workplaces and Inc. received nearly 350 completed applications for the 2011 contest. A national panel of experts in leadership and small to mid-sized business judged finalists on employee engagement and development, company mission, rewards and recognition, management effectiveness, and benefits.

“These firms represent some of the finest privately held companies in the world,” states Bob LaPointe, president of Inc. “Their stories, appearing in the June issue of Inc., clearly demonstrate that taking an innovative approach to creating the right culture-one in which human capital is embedded in a company’s value proposition-can create realcompetitive leadership. Each of these Top Small Company Workplaces offers an environment in which people flourish and, as a result, profit follows.”

Hopkins Printing is committed to creating an environment where employees can thrive and one way they do so is through a “three-deep” training agenda. 75% of all positions are trained 3 Deep at Hopkins, which means that at any one time three people are capable of operating a particular piece of equipment or covering for a certain position. Cross-training of all employees to cover other positions increases productivity, creates flexibility, and allows employees to become knowledgeable authorities in multiple areas of business and production.

“It is a true honor to be named one of the best small workplaces in the nation and a greater surprise to have Hopkins as one of the featured companies in the Inc. magazine article.Winning Workplaces reviewed each of our programs, policies, and benefits before they surveyed all of our employees.  It was a thorough process and we’re pleased that everyone was able to contribute their thoughts.  Hopkins employees care about the success of our company and together we all make it a great place to work!” said Michelle Waterhouse, HR director for Hopkins Printing.

Hopkins Printing Makes Printing Impressions Magazine’s Top 400 List

COLUMBUS, OH (February 8, 2011) €“ 2010 marked another repeat appearance of Hopkins Printing on Printing Impressions Magazine€™s Top 400 List. The annual list has provided the most complete ranking of leading printing companies in the United States and Canada for 27 years.

Companies earning a spot in the top 400 are in the commercial printing business and produce items consisting of catalogs, directories, books, advertising inserts, business forms, financial printing, publications, and specialty printing. Eligibility for the list is based on annual sales volume so the number reported often reflects the previous year€™s sales.

Hopkins does not view the distinction of appearing on the Top 400 List as a sole selling point for potential customers, rather, Hopkins believes that it is their company dynamics paired with the Top 400 distinction as something exceptional. The combination of Hopkins€™ size, values stemming from employee ownership, and credibility of being in the top 400 printers is what allows Hopkins to bring a unique set of values to use. €œHopkins offers its customers the dual benefit of having the experience of an ongoing relationship with a dedicated team, while still being a company which competes on the same level of quality and service offerings as bigger commercial printers€ said Vice President of Sales and Marketing Roy Waterhouse.

Hopkins Printing Earns 12 International Gallery Awards

COLUMBUS, OH (December 14, 2010) €“ 8 golds, 3 silvers, and 1 bronze would be quite a feat at an Olympic Games, but it is also the accomplishment of 12 pieces printed by Hopkins Printing at the 36th International Gallery of Excellence. This annual printing and graphic arts competition is held in Minneapolis, Minnesota and supported by the IAPHC, The Graphic Professionals Resource Network.

In 2010, entries originating in Australia, Britain, China, Hong Kong, Korea, India, Italy, Malaysia, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Singapore and South Africa joined hundreds of other entrants from around North America for this competition. Hopkins Printing Hosts Health Fair

COLUMBUS, OH (November 11, 2010) – A team of Ohio State University nurses traveled to Hopkins Printing Tuesday, November 9, 2010 fully equipped to evaluate the health of Hopkins staffers and their spouses. There was no infectious disease outbreak or quarantine prompting their visit, in fact, the reason for their call can be credited to a much more positive event: Hopkins Printing was holding a health fair.

Workplace health fairs give employees the opportunity to have their biometrics screened on-site. Hopkins€™ health fair participants€™ blood glucose levels, triglycerides, cholesterol, BMI, and blood pressures were all tested. If any results triggered concern, literature on how to improve conditions was made available for individuals to take with them.

In addition to having a free health check, nearly 60 prizes donated by Hopkins€™ vendors were presented for raffle. Every employee who participated in the Health Fair received two raffle tickets and could place their tickets in a lottery of choice for their desired prize. Tickets were drawn at the end of the fair and winners were chosen for all prizes. Jeremy Doty and Karen Wilkison received the grand prizes of new bicycles. All partakers received healthy, complimentary refreshments.

Hopkins values its employee owners and held the health fair as a way to demonstrate respect for them. If employees have an increased awareness of their health, they can better take care of themselves and in turn further contribute to a sustainable and competitive business. “The health fair provided a quick and easy analysis of basic health issues. The resulting numbers provided me with important information and a desire to alter certain habits to improve my internal health. I€™m thankful to everyone at Hopkins for providing this benefit for us!€ said Hopkins Job Planner, Kevin Daulton.
