Congressman Visits Hopkins Printing

COLUMBUS, OHIO (October 26, 2010)Hopkins Printing had the opportunity to host Congressman Pat Tiberi of the 12th district of Ohio in their plant on Tuesday, October 26, 2010. Jim Hopkins and Roy Waterhouse gave Mr. Tiberi a tour of the facilities during which time they were able to speak about the value Employee Stock Ownership Plans bring to a company, its employees, and the community. The Congressman then took a few minutes to speak to the employees of Hopkins regarding ESOPs and his current re-election campaign. He fielded questions from the employees on social security, postage, ESOPs and healthcare.

Nationally 11,000 companies function as ESOPs, which operate through trusts that enable a company to be employee owned. Hopkins Printing€™s transition to an ESOP has proven to be a positive shift for the company by empowering the work force and allowing each employee€™s actions and hard work to directly impact their financial futures. €œAn ESOP is beneficial for our company not only because it helps attract and retain the best employees, but it encourages coworkers to take personal initiative for their financial success€ said Hopkins Printing Folder Operator Mike VanAtta.

It is important to employee owned companies that members of Congress and Senators are not only aware of ESOP legislation, but that they support it. Hopkins Printing€™s 100 employees contribute to the 8 million employees working for ESOPs nationally. When accounting for the families that depend on ESOP employees, a significant number of Americans are affected by this legislation.

€œWe wish to thank Congressman Pat Tiberi and his staff for taking the time to visit with us during the National ESOP month of October. We hope that Congressman Tiberi can go back to Washington and convince his colleagues that the real strength of this great nation is in American companies owned and operated by American workers€ commented Hopkins€™ CST prepress manager Dave Gosiewski.

Hopkins Printing Supports ACS Making Strides and Ohio State Football

COLUMBUS, OHIO (September 2, 2010) – On Thursday September 2nd the phrase “today is the day” will be interpreted by the majority of Ohioans as the day that has been anxiously awaited for the past 8 months: the return of Buckeye football. To others though, the phrase “today is the day” can infer more significant events, such as new research, treatments, and hope for a cure to cancer.  Hopkins Printing staffers are supporting both groups on September 2nd through a special dress down day.

The casual dress day is to benefit the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk which is backed by the American Cancer Society. After 2 straight decades of increasing diagnoses of the disease, death rates have seen a decline and female breast cancer incidence rates have reduced dramatically. These decreases are credited to earlier detection and improved treatments prompted by events and fundraisers generating financial and educational support.

Members of Hopkins Printing’s staff who are both participants in the annual Making Strides walk and Buckeye devotees, saw an opportunity to bring these two passions together. Employees were given the option to dress down Thursday for $5.00 with all proceeds benefitting Making Strides.

Many employees saw the casual dress day as a chance to support the Buckeyes while making a difference. “The donations generated today will be a great addition to the Making Strides funds we will raise on the walk next month. It’s a win-win for everyone at Hopkins. We are banding together to support Breast Cancer awareness and we get to show our spirit for the Bucks” said digital prepress team member Linda Davis.

Hopkins Printing Recognized for Green Initiatives.

COLUMBUS, OHIO (July 13, 2010) – At first mention, “environmentally-friendly printing company” may sound like an oxymoron to many. However, upon deeper investigation, one will discover that printing companies do exist that are not only environmentally friendly, but environmentally proactive. Earlier this month Hopkins Printing was awarded the Agfa Graphics GreenWorks Environmental Recognition Award.

GreenWorks awarded printers must meet a required set of criteria which includes integrating sustainable technology and participating in other green projects.

The current myth surrounding the printing industry is that printers are indifferent to their consequences on the environment. On the contrary, responsible printers take giant measures to ensure the well-being of the planet we live on. Many people are unaware of the ecologically sensitive equipment available to companies. Hopkins Printing incorporates chemistry-free and low-chemistry plates into their systems instead of the traditional analog or digital plates. Hopkins’ newest Heidelberg 6 color press uses less blanket wash and clean up materials than its predecessor. Hopkins also utilizes a solvent recycling system that allows them to purchase less blanket wash each year. As a result, the impact on the environment is reduced, a significant decrease in chemistry use is seen, and an overall increase in energy savings occurs.

Hopkins Printing persistently searches for and employs further innovative green solutions such as using sustainable products, like Forest Stewardship Council certified papers, and partaking in unique recycling programs for their paper, ink, blanket wash and light bulbs. “We realize the impact that today’s actions have on our earth and generations to come, which is why Hopkins Printing chooses to invest in environmentally responsible equipment and processes and why partnering with Agfa just makes sense” said Jon Morgan, IT Manager for Hopkins.

Hopkins Printing is proud to be an environmentally aware and accountable company and is honored to receive the Agfa Graphics GreenWorks Environmental Recognition Award.

Hopkins Founder Enters New Phase.

COLUMBUS, OHIO (June 1, 2010) – This week Jim Hopkins announced to the employee owners of Hopkins Printing that he has decided to move into a “semi-retirement” phase of his life.

Jim started his first print shop in his garage more than 35 years ago with a $2000 bank loan and $1000 from his mother.  J & A Printing grew into Hop-To Printing.  Hop-To Printing grew into J.F. Hopkins & Associates.  J.F. Hopkins & Associates became what we are today, Hopkins Printing.

Jim’s commitment to our trade, our customers, our employees, our suppliers all center around “treating others as you would like to be treated.”  That commitment has helped Hopkins Printing to become one of the leading printing companies in Ohio to work for and to procure print and graphic communications solutions.

Jim has received many honors over the years including being inducted into the Printing Impressions/RIT Printing Industry Hall of Fame, being named one of Columbus Ohio’s 10 Best CEOs by the Columbus C.E.O. Magazine, being inducted into the Junior Achievement Central Ohio Business Hall of Fame, being named Craftsman of the Year by the Columbus Club of Printing House Craftsmen and he was awarded the Franklinton Award by the Printing Industries of Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

Jim has served on and chaired many boards during the past several years including the Homeless Families Foundation, the Printing Industries of Ohio and Northern Kentucky, the Printing Industry Education Funds and Skills Ohio.  He was on advisory councils for Columbus State Community College and the Northeast Career Center.  Jim was also a trustee for the Printing Industries Health Care Plan.

Jim and Arnie Hopkins have been married 46 years and plan to cut back the number of days they work in the plant to spend some quality “retirement” time together.  They enjoy reading, traveling, spending time with their four grandchildren and boating at Buckeye Lake.

This week Jim announced that Roy Waterhouse will become President and Vicky Tilton will become COO.  Jim will remain CEO and will continue to help guide Roy, Vicky and the entire management team as we continue to grow and improve as a successful company.

People’s Choice Award

COLUMBUS, OHIO (February 22, 2010) – Movie makers have the Emmy Awards and the Golden Globes.  Broadway has the Tony awards.  The music industry has the Grammy Awards. Our printing industry has a couple of award opportunities.  Earlier this month Hopkins Printing was recognized at the Print Excellence Awards Banquet sponsored by the Printing Industries of Ohio and Northern Kentucky.  It was a great night for Hopkins with the announcement of 14 print quality awards.  We had an extra special piece in the competition this year that gained the attention of the judges and the majority of industry professionals who attended the Print Excellence Banquet.

Banquet attendees were invited to view all the award winning pieces and cast a vote for one to win the People’s Choice Award.  This annual award adds a little bit of excitement and friendly competition among industry peers during the evening. This year the People’s Choice award winner was the Ohio Dominican University’s “Answer The Call” booklet printed by Hopkins Printing.  In addition, PIANKO announced that the Print Excellence judges had awarded this same booklet a Best of Region award.  “We are proud that Conrad Phillips Vutech allowed us to produce this booklet.  A great piece starts with an eye-catching design that gets the judges to pick up the piece and study the print quality. Answer The Call is beautiful – a superb example of printing craftsmanship and worthy of these awards,” said Michelle Waterhouse.  Waterhouse selects and enters projects into each of the annual contests for Hopkins.

Hopkins Printing recognizes our award winning pieces on a special award wall in our plant.  The next time you are in, take a minute to celebrate all the award winners we have produced for our customers.

Hopkins Printing Adds New Platesetter

COLUMBUS, OHIO (August 6, 2009) – Hopkins Printing continues to upgrade our equipment with the purchase of a new platesetter. This platesetter represents our continued commitment to invest in the infrastructure that will allow us to better serve our customers and improve the level of work we produce for our customers.

The Avalon platesetter has many improvements that will continue to upgrade our throughput and quality. The productivity of the Avalon allows us to image up to 24 plates per hour with increased quality and consistency over our previous platesetter. This platesetter also punches the plate internally resulting in more consistent registration on press.

The Avalon also has a lighter impact on the environment due to being almost developer free and does not require baking to set the image on the plate. This also means less maintenance is needed. “Any time we can upgrade equipment that increases quality and reduces the impact on the environment, we see that as an easy decision” said Roy Waterhouse, V.P. of Sales & Marketing.
